學(xué)神說：如何DIY申請名校助研

Q:RA對留學(xué)申請的重要性不言而喻。如何才能爭取到寶貴的RA機會呢？

北京大學(xué)E同學(xué)，通過支點老師的幫助申請到哈佛大學(xué)一年期交換項目。本人同時申請到MIT的研究項目。

01、尋找RA的途徑

一般來說，RA的機會按錄取渠道劃分，可以劃為兩類。一類是國外學(xué)校自己的官方項目，或者是國內(nèi)大學(xué)和國外大學(xué)官方合作的暑研崗位。第二類則是聯(lián)系實驗室的負責(zé)教授，經(jīng)由教授同意后，通過“非校方”的渠道拿到RA機會。

類的暑研機會，需申請者到各個學(xué)校的官方網(wǎng)站上搜索。每個學(xué)校不一樣，有些允許international student申請，有些則不允許。Deadline也各不相同，所需的材料也不盡相同。

需要注意的是，盡早關(guān)注，早做準備申請材料，學(xué)校會有各種名額限制（比如：MIT這個項目只針對本校生和申請MIT-Wellesley Exchange Program的Wellesley的學(xué)生開放）。一般暑假開始前幾個月就必須完成申請，甚至有些要提前半年。

但是，第 一類機會并不適用于所有申請者，不同學(xué)校對暑研開放的領(lǐng)域不用，你的理想校并沒有這樣的項目，或者有這樣的項目卻沒有你專業(yè)對應(yīng)的研究機會。而且，有些啟動較晚的申請者可能無意之間就錯過了deadline。此時就需要轉(zhuǎn)向第二種類型的RA，也即通過給你感興趣的教授和實驗室負責(zé)人發(fā)送email，為自己爭取機會。

02、如何寫申請email

下面我們就對如何寫這封毛遂自薦的email稍作分析。

1、開宗明義

首先自報家門，我叫XXX，是XX大學(xué)X年級的本科生。I am writing this letter to apply your Research Assistant position. 這樣做的目的是，讓教授一目了然地明白這封郵件的目的。一定要忌諱七彎八拐，說了好多讓教授不知所云。

2、敘述自己的研究經(jīng)歷

最理想的是有在相同/相關(guān)領(lǐng)域?qū)嶒炇夜ぷ鬟^的經(jīng)歷，或者你的導(dǎo)師認識你申請RA的老師。這將快速拉近你和這位教授之間的距離，讓他迅速知道你可以做什么（what you are capable of doing）。

在這里，你也可以對你過往做過的研究做一個非常簡短、學(xué)術(shù)的摘要，展示你已經(jīng)熟悉的技能(skill set)。一個可行的結(jié)構(gòu)如：從background (literature review), 到design，到experiment，再到analysis 最 后conclusion。

注意要簡潔！學(xué)術(shù)！簡潔是因為教授沒有空細讀長篇論述，學(xué)術(shù)是因為這展示了你的研究能力。如果能在較短的篇幅里準確、嚴謹?shù)仃U釋一個實驗，這也側(cè)面反映了你的學(xué)術(shù)能力。該用的terminology務(wù)必用上，邏輯關(guān)聯(lián)詞要環(huán)環(huán)緊扣。

總而言之，你在這一段要展示你的過往成功經(jīng)歷，研究能力，讓導(dǎo)師相信你如果加入到這個團隊中，是能夠為項目作出貢獻的。建議這一段寫完之后，請你的師兄師姐或者學(xué)術(shù)圈內(nèi)的專業(yè)的人看一下，改一下。

3、主要圍繞這個主題：“教授看了申請者的研究之后，判斷你值不值得被招來?！北热纾憧梢哉故灸銓@個教授以及這個實驗室的了解。

可以用這樣的句子展開：“我看了你的代表作（書），……”，“你們實驗室從2011年至今圍繞xx主題發(fā)表的xx篇papers，我看了之后，覺得……”。

你應(yīng)當展現(xiàn)自己的研究興趣和特長，與這個教授的團隊非常匹配——這也正是你申請這個實驗室的原因。注意切忌說空話，如果實際上并沒有關(guān)注過這個教授的研究，不要編造。因為你的評論，你的問題，或者你們之后的交流中，大咖們一定能判斷出你到底有沒有看過、思考過。

4、寫一寫你會的技能

比如學(xué)科的通用軟件，編程技能，或者一種/幾種研究范式?；蛘邔懮?，你可能可以為某一個具體的ongoing project貢獻出xx方面的工作。讓教授看到你作為一個“助手”(assistant)的價值。

5、整封郵件，注意語言的使用，因為這折射出你的英語能力?？梢愿缴铣煽儐魏秃啔v。

以上就是毛遂自薦申請RA郵件的一個寫作思路。其實沒有什么一定之規(guī)，只要誠懇總會打動人的。請選擇適合自己，適合自己專業(yè)的方式來寫這封信。能力+熱情，我想總會打動人的。RA不僅僅對留學(xué)申請有幫助，更對未來的職業(yè)發(fā)展有著莫大的益處。

These benefits persisted after a 9-month follow-up survey, suggesting some lasting changes in undergraduates’ perceptions of the value of research. The fact that participation in undergraduate research helps students clarify a career path is valuable not only for the student, but for society at large.

Students who complete an undergraduate research opportunity report increased interest in careers in the areas of science, technology, engineering, or mathematics.

After an undergraduate research experience, 68% of students stated they had some increased interest in pursuing a STEM career (i.e. Science, Technology,Engineering, or Mathematics).

Additionally, 29% developed a new expectation of obtaining a PhD due to the experience of undergraduate research. This increased interest in careers in STEM benefits society at large as students develop interest in highly skilled professions that promote independence, collaboration, and innovation.

One of our students, in response to a departmental exit survey stated, “research methodology is an important portion of the curriculum because graduate schools and supervisors are impressed when they see this on your resume, plus it’s a great experience.”

We certainly believe undergraduate research to be an advantage when seeking post-graduate training; however, experience in research methodology is beneficial to all students not just those seeking further training after graduation.

Ethical study and application of the scientific process develops critical thinking and independence necessary for achieving the highest standards of quality in scholarship, service and leadership.

Developing skills in critical thinking and communication will allow students to emerge as leaders in multiple professions after graduation.
